About the Piece

In ÔWith my wild horseÕ (1970-1984) we perhaps see the abuse of the Jews, or indeed any group at the hands of a tyrannical power: a man peacefully smiles as he holds back another fleeing in terror. The ease of the captorÕs hold versus the frantic strength of the man attempting to escape reminds us of ElsnerÕs early life, particularly being coolly lined up to die by the Gestapo lieutenant; the overwhelming internal fear of those in that line set against the nonchalant everyday murder of the perpetrator.
