Director's statement

K.C.S. Panniker, a renowned artist from Chennai, played a pivotal role in shaping modern Indian art through his leadership in the Madras Art Movement during the mid-20th century. Born in 1911, Panniker was not only a skilled painter but also a visionary educator, serving as the principal of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai. His art combined traditional Indian symbols, mystical themes, and folk elements with modernist abstraction, creating a unique visual language. Panniker's works often featured vibrant colors, calligraphic forms, and philosophical motifs that reflected his deep engagement with spirituality and indigenous culture. As one of the founders of the Cholamandal Artists' Village, Panniker fostered a communal space for artists, which became a significant hub for the Madras Art Movement, promoting modern Indian art with a focus on regional identity and global resonance. His influence extends beyond his own work, as he mentored generations of artists and contributed to the evolution of contemporary art in India.
